Holga Struggle: The Best of the Worst

Developing my Holga skills has been a tedious and expensive process... so I present to you: the best of the worst. Medium format at it's most painfully beautiful, as in "thank god this one actually came out okay" beautiful. I will continue to develop my skills, and get back to ya. Color photos shot on Kodak 120 VC 200-speed on Holga 120SF, Black and White shot on Kodak T-MAX 400-speed on Holga 120CFN.

Out of 4 rolls, these are some of my favorites:

Headphone Bumpers of 2009

(In no particular order, save for Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion IS number one), I present to you...

Headphone Bumpers of 2009:

1. Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavillion **
2. The Flaming Lips- Embryonic
3. Dirty Projectors- Bitte Orca
4. Russian Circles- Geneva
5. Why?- Eskimo Snow
6. Pheonix- Wolfgang Amadeus Pheonix
7. The Dead Weather- Horehound
8. Grizzly Bear- Veckatimest
9. Animal Collective- Fall Be Kind EP
10. This Will Destroy You- Field Studies EP
11. Girls- Album

2009 also brought some terrible things. I present to you, now...

Ear Poison of 2009:

1. Jay Z- The Blueprint 3 (Hey, don't get me wrong, I loved Empire State of Mind, but other than that, it was bland, boring, and generally predictable. Letdown Maximus.)
2. Anything autotune or even the slightest hint of Kanye.
3. Gucci Mane- The State vs. Radric Davis (I never listened to the whole thing, but I sure hated it on the radio)
4. Creed- Full Circle (When are these guys gonna stop making records? They all sound the same.)
5. Bon Jovi- The Circle  (I sense a repetitive theme, here..)

There you have it. And I assure you, there is a lot more Ear Poison out there than just 5.

And one more thing. Check out my new radio slot on KWVA Eugene 88.1 fm, or stream it live at www.kwvaradio.org . New slot starts Wednesday, January 6 from 3-4 pm PST

spin journalist makes ridiculous claims about the almighty

in an relatively recent spin article, journalist chris norris wrote up a little ditty for the inclusive headline "16 rock myths debunked". norris's contribution: "myth number 1: radiohead can do no wrong." he argues that radiohead suffers from "gimmick hit syndrome," which he describes as such:

"Thanks to "Creep," from their 1993 debut, Pablo Honey, the band contracted Gimmick Hit Syndrome and began the usual defensive career arc. To prove they were more than a grunge one-liner, they recorded the smart, powerful anthems of The Bends. To prove they weren't just excellent rock songwriters, they dug deep and created the stunning OK Computer, whose melancholy sweep of strange, gorgeous songs played like an elegy for modern man. With that, Radiohead supernovaed, garnering every superlative there was, including comparisons to epochal albums like Dark Side of the Moon. Then they had to make another one..."

blah blah blah, shut up. seriously, chris norris, i couldn't disagree more. as far as radiohead is concerned, the only issue i have is that pitchfork media will never rate an album a ten unless it is put out by the almighty five. all jokes aside, radiohead is a band by which i feel my generation can be defined by. i don't know you, chris, but i feel sorry for you.

Fall Be Kind EP = Ear Sugar

Animal Collective's newest release, Fall Be Kind EP, is yet another victory for the group: alas, The Almighty Collective has yet to disappoint. As always, this record is filled with crunchy and erratic vibrance. It seems these guys know just how to pluck at my heartstrings with their more recent, outstanding variations on the simple pop formula. Yet, the magic of the Collective's version on pop: it never gets old. Not to me, at least. I digress. What I love so much about Fall Be Kind (you know, besides everything), is that it seems to be the perfect dramatic foil of its predecessor, Merriweather Post Pavillion. This may undoubtedly be because Avey Tare has said that some of the tracks on the new EP were "too dark" and were cut from Merriweather, and it is apparent: the two perfectly compliment each other.

Notable Tracks: All (5 songs) 28mins:20secs of it, seriously.
